Your outdoor room, built properly.

A deck is a room without a roof. It deserves footings below frost, a ledger flashed like roofing and boards that span a dinner party. Ledgerline flashes the ledger before anything else, frames to real loads, and agrees one honest, clear quote with you before the first footing is dug.

What we do

One crew for your whole outdoor room.

From a single accent corner to a full exterior renew, prep, work and protect, all under one roof. Every service below carries the same quality promise.

Choosing right

Which deck is your deck?

Decking is the part you see. The frame, footings and the board that ties it to your house decide how long you see it. Both halves, honestly.

Pressure-treated

The most deck per dollar.

Upkeep
Stain or seal every 2–3 years
Life
15–20 years, maintained
Best for
Budgets and big square footage

Fresh boards move as they dry, expect some twisting and checking in year one. It’s the material, not the carpenter.

Cedar

Warmth you can smell.

Upkeep
Clean and re-oil on a rhythm
Life
15–25 years, loved
Best for
Looks and bare feet

Left alone it greys, some people pay extra for that look, some call it neglect. Decide which you are before you buy it.

Composite

Weekends back, up front.

Upkeep
Soap and water, no staining ever
Life
25–50 years by line
Best for
Keep-it-forever decks

Costs more on day one, gets warm in full sun, and the frame underneath is still wood, its flashing and hardware matter more, not less.

The ledger

Where decks live or die.

What
The board bolting the deck to your house
Truth
Most deck failures start here, at flashing and fasteners

You’ll never see it again after the build, which is exactly why how it’s flashed and bolted belongs in your quote, in writing.

Older deck feeling bouncy? Often the frame is fine and the floor is tired, board-and-rail refreshes cost a fraction of a rebuild. We’ll tell you which yours is.

Straight pricing

One number. In writing. It doesn’t move.

No hourly meter, no surprise line items, no “while we’re at it”. You approve one clear quote before the first footing is dug, so you know the cost up front.

In writing03
Signed & guaranteed

The number lands in writing with a two-year workmanship warranty. If it isn’t right, we make it right.

The breakdown

What moves the number.

No mystery math. Four things decide what a deck costs, and we walk every one with you before the quote lands.

Framing & footingsWhat holds the deck up is most of the work, digging footings, flashing the ledger, sizing the beams. It never shows, and it is most of the price.
Size & heightSquare footage, how high off the ground, and how many stairs. More elevation means more structure and railing.
Boards & railingCedar, composite or hardwood, and the railing style. What you walk on and grab sets the tone and the number.
Site & accessSlope, soil and how far we haul materials through the yard. An easy flat lot costs less than a steep, tight one.

Whatever the mix, you get one clear quote, in writing, before any work starts.

What a serious deck quote includes, ours or anyone’s:
  • Decking and frame material, named separately
  • Ledger detail: flashing and bolts, spelled out
  • Footings: depth and size, below frost line
  • Railing height and baluster spacing, to code
  • Hardware grade, named, it’s what rusts first
  • Permit & inspection, in or out, stated
A deck is a small building attached to your house. The lines nobody photographs, ledger, footings, hardware, are the ones holding the party up.
On the job

Recent jobs

Real work, in plain numbers.

Three jobs from the past few months, what they were, where, and how long they actually took.

Composite deck, new build
Woodstock·4 days

Concrete footings poured below frost, a fresh-flashed ledger, then 320 sq ft of grooved composite set on 12-inch joists with hidden fasteners. Picture-frame border and matching fascia so no cut ends show.

Multi-level cedar rebuild
Laurelhurst·9 days

Old deck stripped to the posts, new 6x6 bases on fresh footings, then two levels framed for real party loads with a cedar-wrapped pergola tying it together. Boards run tight, hand-sealed on all six sides before install.

Rotted ledger repair
Sellwood·1 day

Pulled the failing board, found the leak sat behind an unflashed ledger. Replaced two soft joists and their hangers, then flashed the ledger with tape and metal so water sheds off the house for good.

Where we work

Proudly serving the Portland metro

A lot of our work comes from a neighbor who watched us work the house next door. If you're in the metro, we're just around the corner.

Nine wet months a year go straight for the ledger and the fasteners — the two spots nobody sees, and the reason our builds get flashed like a roof down there.

How it goes

From first call to done.

No mystery in the middle. This is the path the job actually takes, start to finish.

01
The on-site walkthroughwithin 3 days of your call

A lead carpenter comes out, walks the yard with you, checks grade, drainage and where the ledger meets the house, and talks through boards, railings and how you actually want to use the deck.

02
Quote lands in writingwithin 48 hours after the visit

You get one flat-rate price on paper, itemized by framing, decking and railings, with the material brand and board color named. No allowances that balloon later, no verbal numbers.

03
Permit and materials lined up1-3 weeks out

We pull the deck permit with the city, order your specific boards and hardware, and confirm the build week with you before anything shows up. Delivery drops on your driveway a day or two ahead.

04
We build your decktypically 1-2 weeks on site

The same crew frames footings to final board, sets code-met railings and stairs, and stays through the city inspection. You get a photo update at the end of each working day.

05
Final walkthrough and sign-offthe day we finish

We walk every board and rail with you, tighten anything that moved, haul off all offcuts and sweep the site, and hand you the written workmanship warranty plus care notes before we leave the driveway.

Before you hire anyone

Five questions for every deck builder.

Including us. A deck is the one structure guests will stand on in a group. These five questions are how you make sure it’s boring in exactly the right way.

01How do you attach and flash the ledger?

Through-bolts and layered flashing, described without hesitation. Most deck failures in the news start at this one board.

02How deep are the footings, and why that depth?

The answer should mention your frost line. Piers that heave lift the whole deck out of level, one winter at a time.

03Is this permitted, and will it pass rail code?

Railing height and baluster spacing are child-safety numbers, not suggestions. A pro quotes them from memory.

04What hardware and fasteners, exactly?

Modern treated lumber eats cheap screws. Hot-dipped or stainless is a spec worth two extra words on the quote.

05For composite: which line, and what’s underneath?

Composite brands span huge price ranges, and the frame below is still wood. Both halves deserve a name in writing.

Bring this list to the estimate. We’ll answer all five before you ask.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Getting started
Do you charge for estimates?+
No. Written estimates for every service and commercial plans are always free, we visit, measure, talk through stains and finishes, and email you a clear, itemized quote with no obligation.
How soon can you start?+
Most estimates go out within a day, and typical projects are scheduled within one to two weeks. For urgent renews, before a move, a sale or an event, just tell us the date and we'll do our best to fit you in.
What does “free estimates” mean?+
Before any work begins, we give you one clear quote to approve, prep, materials and labor included. No hourly meter, no surprise add-ons at the end. You always decide before we start.
What should I do before the build?+
Pick the doors we should protect and tell us about sprinklers before we dig. Layout, permits and the neighbor's fence line are our homework.
Do I need a permit for a deck?+
Usually yes above a certain height and size in Portland, we know the thresholds, pull the permit and meet the inspector.
Can you price over the phone?+
A realistic range from size and material. The quote needs the free walkthrough, slopes and what the house can carry decide too much.
How long does a deck take?+
Most builds run one to two weeks including inspections, resurfaces less. The written schedule lands before the first footing.
What happens during the free walkthrough?+
We read sun, slope and access, probe any existing frame, and talk through how you actually want to use the room, twenty minutes, flat quote after.
Wood, composite & the build
Wood or composite, honestly?+
Cedar is cooler, repairable and smells like vacation, composite never wants stain. Budget, sun and your patience for maintenance decide, we lay samples in your actual light.
What is a ledger and why do you keep saying it?+
The board that ties deck to house, and the detail behind most deck failures. Ours get layered flashing and structural bolts, we will happily show you photos.
Can you rebuild on my existing frame?+
If it rings solid, gladly, that is the affordable path. We probe joist by joist and show you the screwdriver test before promising anything.
Which board fits our place?+
Tap through the Deck Studio above, cedar, composite slate, walnut, and the page takes each tone. Samples land in your sun before you sign.
Do you haul the old deck away?+
Same day it comes apart, hauled and recycled where the wood allows, nails magnet-swept from the lawn.
Weather, durability & guarantee
Why do decks fail early?+
Ledgers without flashing, posts on dirt, rails lagged into single boards. All invisible on day one, all certain within years, we do none of them.
How soon can we use it?+
Walk on it same day, furniture after the rails, parties after inspection. Stained decks want two dry days before the couch comes out.
Is the work guaranteed?+
Yes, in writing, workmanship warrantied and the frame stands behind it. A board that lifts brings us back free.
Is the Care Plan worth it?+
For most homes, yes: an annual inspection, free scuff and touch-up visits, priority scheduling, and 15% off future projects typically pay for the membership the first time you use it, and keep every finish looking new.
